Sustainable Innovations: A 100% Plant-Based Ski Wax

Not chemists or scientists but dedicated skiers and environmentalists, the founders behind Mountain Flow Eco Wax created North America’s only 100% plant based ski wax after recognizing that a product they depended on for their sport was not only supporting the oil industry, but inadvertently putting over 2 million pounds of wax made from petroleum by-products into the continent’s snowpack each year, which then finds its way to our creeks, rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Based in Colorado, Peter Arlein and his team created a Kickstarter campaign and began years of homegrown research and development until they created their current line of waxes – 100% plant and water based, biodegradable, and shipped in minimal, recyclable packaging. More importantly for getting skiers to actually switch to plant-based wax, the Eco Wax performed in speed tests to within 1% of conventional waxes. While they’re still working on a race-quality version of the product, their line of waxes is a worthy substitute for the everyday resort and backcountry skier or snowboarder, giving people who love the environment and their sport the option to make a cleaner, greener, healthier choice.
